You’ve heard those jokes. The ones with the lightbulb.
Q: How many psychiatrists does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Only one, but the bulb has got to WANT to change.
Q: How many voyeurs does it take to change a lightbulb? A: Only one, but they’d much rather watch someone else do it.
Well there’s one about Actors. Maybe you’ve heard it, but it goes like this….
Q: How many Actors does it take to change a lightbulb? A: 5. One to do it and the other 4 to say, ‘I could’ve done that better’.
In the words of the great Sage: It’s funny, because it’s true.
Pick any actor, any role, in any show and you will find some actors who are sitting around saying “I could’ve done that better.”
I’ve done it. You’ve done it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a good person or you just play one on TV. If you’re in community theatre or you’re sitting in the Dolby Theatre on Oscars night and you’re “just happy to be nominated“.
The truth is, Actors are a jealous breed. We all think we could’ve done a better job than the one who got the gig.
But that’s part of what drives us. What makes us want to keep working in this crazy business.
The chance that one day, we will be the one to change the lightbulb.
But for now, I’m happy to hold the ladder.
