Teaching and Mentorship

Creating Inclusive Learning Communities

My approach to teaching is grounded in collaboration, curiosity, and the belief that students learn best when they feel supported and challenged. Throughout my career as an artist, educator, and facilitator, I have worked to create environments where individuals build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and discover their own voices.

Leadership Development & Student Engagement

For more than 20 years with Playfair, Inc., I have worked with college students through leadership development, orientation programming, and community-building initiatives.

My experience includes:

  • Training and mentoring student leaders
  • Facilitating orientation and transition programs
  • Developing leadership skills through interactive learning
  • Supporting students from diverse backgrounds and experiences
  • Creating inclusive spaces that encourage participation and connection

Theatre, Performance, and Collaborative Practice

My work in theatre has also informed my teaching practice, particularly through my experience in Chicano Theatre, where performance becomes a space for cultural expression, storytelling, and community engagement.

Through this work, I have gained experience in:

  • Ensemble-based collaboration and devised performance
  • Exploring identity, culture, and lived experience through theatre
  • Using storytelling as a tool for dialogue and understanding
  • Supporting collaborative creative processes in rehearsal and performance
  • Engaging audiences through accessible and socially grounded work

This background strengthens my ability to guide students in creative exploration while fostering respect for diverse perspectives and lived experiences.

Mentorship Philosophy

Mentorship is a central part of my work. I believe effective mentorship combines active listening, thoughtful feedback, encouragement, and practical guidance. I support students in developing confidence, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate with others.

Bringing Professional Practice into Teaching

My professional experience as an actor and facilitator informs my teaching by bringing real-world examples of performance, storytelling, communication, and creativity into the learning environment. I encourage students to take creative risks, engage with others, and connect their personal experiences to their growth as professionals and leaders.
